Iris Bio – Passion for Pasta

The mission is: Working for our planet. And to produce the best organic pasta from grains supplied by organic farmers from all over Italy, who belong to the cooperative Astra Bio. For 40 years now, organic pioneer Maurizio Gritta is the driving force behind the company. Convinced by the idea that there is an alternative to the common economic model, he has established the Italian company. German company GEPA: “spearheading fair trade”

The biggest fair trade firm in Europe, domiciled in Wuppertal in Germany, is delighted with another good business year: in 2016 the Gesellschaft zur Förderung der Partnerschaft mit der Dritten Welt mbH (GEPA) – The Fair Trade Company - recorded growth of around 7 percent and achieved turnover of 74 million euros. With the appointment of Peter Schaumberger the company is headed by two managing directors, with Schaumberger becoming the brand and distribution manager. He intends to increase the proportion of organics in the product range and concentrate his attention on sustainability and climate change. The company also involves itself in world economic and development policy issues.

New EU Organic Regulation imminent – an analysis

The organic industry in many European countries reacted with horror when they heard that the Council of Ministers, the EU Parliament and the Commission have agreed behind closed doors on a revision of the EU Organic Regulation. Analysis of the results of negotiations reveals there are good reasons to be horrified. The organic sector is going to have a hard time in future. However, because numerous amendments are necessary, the final meeting of the EU ministers of agriculture was postponed at the last minute.

Ritter Sport: "sustainability " more important than organic

Ritter Sport likes to parade its green image. This German chocolate manufacturer does have an organic line in its product range, but it's not doing so well. Four years ago, Ritter wanted to withdraw from its organic business and convert to “sustainable raw materials”, although it didn't carry through its intention. Now, however, the decision has obviously been made. The company is demanding that 3,500 cocoa farmers in Nicaragua acquire UTZ or Fairtrade certification, which in effect will put an end to organic cropping on these farms.

Organic market in France grows by 10 %

There is strong demand for organic food in France and the market is continually growing. In 2014, turnover grew by 10 % compared with 2013 and amounted to five billion euros (Germany 7.8 billion euros). Per capita expenditure in France was 75 euros and the equivalent figure in Germany was 95 euros.

Turkish control organization ETKO loses EU authorization

With the Implementing Regulation 931/2015 the EU Commission removed the Turkish Control Organization ETKO from “The list of recognized control bodies for the purpose of equivalence”. It is unclear what consequences these decisions have for supplies of cereals and seed that were certified by ETKO and sent to the EU but have not yet been processed or consumed.

Poland: new store concepts with bistro

Poland’s biggest wholefood retailer, the Organic Farma Zdrowia Group, increased turnover in 2014 by 25 %, which equates to a 25 % rise in value from 52 million zloty (12.5 million euros) to over 65 million zloty (15.1 million euros). By implementing a franchise system, the company’s aim is to be operating 100 specialist wholefood stores avross the whole of Poland by the end of 2017.

Italy: An Excellent Organic Wine Pavilion at Vinitaly

The second edition on Vinitaly Bio took place at the most important Italian wine fair, Vinitaly, one of the main international wine exhibitions that was held in Verona from 22-25 March 2015. The expo had about 150,000 visitors from 140 countries and was also attended by more than 2,600 journalists from 46 countries. With only 1000 m² available in the pavilion, there was not enough room for some tens of organic wineries; FederBio will try to obtain a larger exhibition are for the 2016 edition.
