An Indian organic journey: Namu & Misha´s reunion

The new Organic Regulation – status quo and outlook

At the IFOAM EU Organic Congress in Tallinn representatives of the EU and of the organic sector discussed pro and contra of the new European Organic Regulation (video). After a record time of more than three years and 18 trilogues Regulation probably will be launched in June 2020, although neither the Council and Commission nor the Parliament and the stakeholders of the organic sector are fully satisfied with the compromise.

IFOAM EU Congress: Roadmap for making Europe more organic

IFOAM EU members and guests from the organic industry as well as policymakers met for the 11th European Organic Congress (EOC) in the Estonian capital Tallinn from 5 - 6 September. The main topics of the first day were the Common European Agricultural Policy (CAP) and the possibilities to implement the ambitious goal of IFOAM EU to reach 50% European agricultural land managed according to organic principles by 2030 (Organic Vision 2030). The new launched "Organic Roadmap" should serve as an inspiration and source of ideas. (Video interview with IFOAM EU President Christopher Stopes)

Cocoa conference: Hunger prices for cheap chocolate

"The cocoa sector will only be sustainable when farmers earn a living." This was stated in the Berlin Declaration adopted at the end of the 4th International Cocoa Conference that took place recently in the German capital. The three-day meeting of around 1,500 cocoa industry players focused on the continuing catastrophic living conditions of cocoa producers, particularly in West Africa. We took a closer look on the cocoa industry and on the organic sector.

Germany: more and more organic eggs from factory farming

The size of poultry houses for organic laying hens has once again become an issue in the German media: there is an increasing trend to big poultry houses. It's not possible to see where this will lead because the new EU Organic Regulation approves the current practice in Germany and a number of other EU countries of keeping 30,000 and more organic hens in one poultry house. When consumers buy their eggs they have no information regarding the size of a particular poultry house.

Tea in shortage

Drought, strikes and unrests limit the choice in the tea shelves. Rooibos and Darjeeling are particularly affected by the consequences. While the deficiency will continue for the also called bush tea or redbush tea, recovery is in sight for Darjeeling tea from India (see our earlier report).

Bengt Anker of Oatly: “I feel like an ambassador for the organic sector”

Bengt Anker, co-founder of Oatly, the Swedish brand for oat milk alternatives, has recently retired. As Sales Manager, he made significant contributions to the success of the company, which now, almost 30 years from its establishment, sells its products throughout Europe. Anker spoke to organic-market.info about his retirement, which he considers an “extended holiday period”.

Germany: 20% organic acreage until 2030?

Almost six months after the election of the new German government last September, the governing coalition between CDU/CSU and SPD is now in place. One of the agreed goals of the two parties is to achieve 20% organic cultivation land by 2030. Julia Klöckner (CDU), new Federal Minister of Agriculture and Food, is about to implement the announcements for sustainable agriculture.

Swedish organic sales increased by 9.3 % in 2017

The total food market was valued at approximately SEK 300 billion (€30 billion) in 2017, including retail, Foodservice and Systembolaget. According to Statistics Sweden, the Consumer Price Index (CPI), food prices rose by about 2 percent in 2017. Ekoweb has summarized the preliminary sales figures for the organic food market for 2017 which shows that organic food sales increased by 9.3 percent in 2017.

European organic market grows to over 33 billion euros

The European Union is the world's second largest single market for organic products after the United States.In 2016, organic retail sales in Europe rose by 11.4 percent to 33.5 billion euros, while organic sales in the EU member states significantly exceeded the 30 billion euro mark and reached 30.7 billion euros. The figures were traditionally compiled by the Research Institute for Organic Agriculture (FiBL), the Agrarmarkt Informations-Gesellschaft (AMI) and partners and presented at the Biofach.

5th Organic Processing Conference: opportunities for an organic future

From 16th to 17th of January 2018, international stakeholders from the organic sector gathered at the 5th Organic Processing Conference (OPC) in Zwolle, Netherlands, to discuss digital opportunities for organic processors. Organized by IFOAM EU and Bionext, the conference guided the participants through a varied program offering different possibilities and ideas on how to improve organics and how cope with problems such as the conventionalization of the organic market by digitalization.
