New EU Organic Regulation imminent – an analysis

The organic industry in many European countries reacted with horror when they heard that the Council of Ministers, the EU Parliament and the Commission have agreed behind closed doors on a revision of the EU Organic Regulation. Analysis of the results of negotiations reveals there are good reasons to be horrified. The organic sector is going to have a hard time in future. However, because numerous amendments are necessary, the final meeting of the EU ministers of agriculture was postponed at the last minute.

Ritter Sport: "sustainability " more important than organic

Ritter Sport likes to parade its green image. This German chocolate manufacturer does have an organic line in its product range, but it's not doing so well. Four years ago, Ritter wanted to withdraw from its organic business and convert to “sustainable raw materials”, although it didn't carry through its intention. Now, however, the decision has obviously been made. The company is demanding that 3,500 cocoa farmers in Nicaragua acquire UTZ or Fairtrade certification, which in effect will put an end to organic cropping on these farms.

Records in U.S. sales 2016 - the $40-billion mark is cracked

End of May the Organic Trade Association OTA published its 2017 Organic Industry Survey at the Annual Policy Conference in Washington D.C.. The survey shows that total sales in 2016 increased to $47 billion US-Dollar. The robust American organic sector stayed on its upward trajectory in 2016, gaining new market share and shattering records, as consumers across the United States ate and used more organic products than ever before, explains OTA.

France: organic retail continues to expand

As last year, France is excelling with high growth rates in the organic sector. In terms of both land area and turnover, the increase is impressive. The expansion of the specialist wholefood trade in France continues unabated. In the first four months of 2017 (middle of December 2016 to middle of April 2017)  61 specialist organic stores and organic supermarkets were opened. The average retail area measured 335 m². Total turnover of the organic industry, including catering, is around 7 billion euros.

Poland: new store concepts with bistro

Poland’s biggest wholefood retailer, the Organic Farma Zdrowia Group, increased turnover in 2014 by 25 %, which equates to a 25 % rise in value from 52 million zloty (12.5 million euros) to over 65 million zloty (15.1 million euros). By implementing a franchise system, the company’s aim is to be operating 100 specialist wholefood stores avross the whole of Poland by the end of 2017.

Italy: An Excellent Organic Wine Pavilion at Vinitaly

The second edition on Vinitaly Bio took place at the most important Italian wine fair, Vinitaly, one of the main international wine exhibitions that was held in Verona from 22-25 March 2015. The expo had about 150,000 visitors from 140 countries and was also attended by more than 2,600 journalists from 46 countries. With only 1000 m² available in the pavilion, there was not enough room for some tens of organic wineries; FederBio will try to obtain a larger exhibition are for the 2016 edition.

Contaminated animal feed: Ukrainian supplier’s certificate withdrawn

In the autumn of 2014, several consignments of organic sunflower cake were imported by the EU as animal feed from Ukraine. They were contaminated with pesticides and were presumably partly of conventional origin. So far, little progress has been made at EU level or in Ukraine to clear up this incident.

The Current State of the Organic Market in China

According to the Report, organic food sales reached 10.5 billion yuan in 2007 in China and were estimated to be around 20-30 billion yuan (about 3-5 billion US$) in 2013. 2.722 million hectares of agricultural land were managed organically to China’s national organic standard.

Total turnover in the regional specialist trade in the metropolitan area of Berlin-Brandenburg was well over 350 million euros in 2014. This equates to growth of at least 8 %.

Current developments in the Russian organic market

In Europe, Russia is considered to be one of the worst performing countries in terms of the turnover of organic food. According to the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service, in 2012 sales of organic food in Russia amounted to 148 million US dollars, which represents growth of 7.8 % compared with 2011.

German enterprise Alnatura increases turnover by 16 %

Even after 30 years since it was founded Alnatura has once again impressed us all with a record result: in the last financial year 2013/2014 ending on 30 September 2014, the company’s turnover came to €689m net. Compared with the year before, this translates into a rise of 16 %.
