One quarter of all food and beverage products introduced in Germany in 2017 were organic. Furthermore, almost three quarters of consumers wish for an even greater choice of organic food and beverages at their place of purchase. This is what Mintel Global New Products Database (GNPD) has found out.

Once again, Berlin-based Bio Company experienced growth in 2017 and it sees itself well positioned for the future. The company's first stores were launched in Berlin almost 20 years ago. For Georg Kaiser, co-founder and CEO at Bio Company, merely selling organic products was not enough. So, he insisted on offering products from the metropolitan region of Berlin-Brandenburg and built up a network of regional suppliers. For this CO₂ saving measure as an important part of the sustainability strategy, the company has been rewarded.

Germany: organic sales crack 10 billion euro barrier

In 2017, the organic sector achieved sales of over 10 billion euros for the first time. This was announced by Peter Röhrig, Managing Director of the Bund Ökologische Lebensmittelwirtschaft (BÖLW, Engl. Association Organic Food Industry), on the occasion of the annual press conference of the organic sector at the start of this year's BIOFACH in Nuremberg.

Naturland with record increase of 25% in farmers and area

The Germany based international organic association Naturland has publishing excellent figures at BioFach: currently there are 54,000 farmers in 52 countries the world over operating in compliance with the Naturland standards. This is 26.4% more than a year ago.


Biofach: award of Organic Food Industry Research Prize

Four female researchers received the Organic Food Industry Research Prize at BioFach. In their dissertations the winners addressed the consequential costs of conventional fertilising, superfoods, organic agriculture at vocational colleges and rearing chickens for both eggs and meat, the so-called dual-purpose “ei care”.


Vegan confectionery product launches more than doubled since 2013
