FiBL: Contribution to the integrity of the international organic market
by Editor (comments: 0)
After four years, the FiBL-project Consolidation of Organic Certification Bodies ended successfully. The project which aimed at strengthening organic certification bodies, helped professionalising four authorites with the SECO-financed development project.
The majority of certified organic farmers worldwide are located in developing and emerging countries. Effective monitoring of the implementation of organic standards is also essential in these countries. In a four-year project within the framework of economic development cooperation of the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs SECO, FiBL has methodically and economically prepared organic certification bodies and policy actors from the four emerging countries Albania, Macedonia, India and Ukraine for future challenges by the following measures:
- intensive (technical) training of 300 employees from eight organic certification
- advice on the establishment of strategic partnerships between international and small local organic certification bodies in emerging countries
- establishment of control networks
Beate Huber, head of the project at FiBL, comments: "Particularly in these networks, extremely important experiences can be exchanged. For example, how to proceed if residues of problematic substances are found or how to carry out risk-based controls in order to clarify possible cases of fraud.
