Austria: 60% share of organics in gastronomy

The Austrian organic association Bio Austria is calling for a 60% share of organics in catering by 2025. The proportion of organic food in the offer of the catering sector is at present about 30 %.

As we can see from a survey by Bio Austria and the Verein zur Förderung von Lebensmitteln mit erhöhter Qualität (VQL) – an association promoting high-quality food -  people are very aware of food quality: 95 percent of the employees surveyed in public and private catering facilities across the whole of Austria buy organic food and around 89 percent buy products carrying the AMA quality logo. The cost pressure in refectories and canteens is the major reason why few organic products are used in this catering segment.

High level of recognition of logos

Over 90 percent of people are familiar with the Austrian organic label of the retail food trade. over 80 percent with the Bio Austria logo and 71 percent with the AMA organic logo. At 56 percent, the EU organic logo is, however, less well known.
