From 14 to 16 October 2016 the Monsanto Tribunal will be held in the Hague. In a video, the environmental activist Dr. Vandana Shiva appeals to people all over the world to get involved, and she explains the background to her call for action.
The Tribunal was planned at the end of last year to bring together all the complaints against Monsanto and to evaluate the damge that has been caused. It is based on the UN “Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights" issued in 2011.
The Tribunal deals with Monsanto's crimes agains the environment, that are called "ecocide" by environmental activists. The Tribunal will examine whether the so-called "Rome Statute", underlying the International Criminal Court since 2002, can be reformed so that ecocide can be incorporated as a crime. This would mean that natural and legal persons could be called to account if they are suspectred of committing such a crime.
Appeal for support
In view of this global challenge, the initiators of the Monsanto Tribunal are appealing to civil society and all people round the world to support this unique initiative by means of a big crowdfunding campaign.
