Ritter Sport: "sustainability " more important than organic

Ritter Sport likes to parade its green image. This German chocolate manufacturer does have an organic line in its product range, but it's not doing so well. Four years ago, Ritter wanted to withdraw from its organic business and convert to “sustainable raw materials”, although it didn't carry through its intention. Now, however, the decision has obviously been made. The company is demanding that 3,500 cocoa farmers in Nicaragua acquire UTZ or Fairtrade certification, which in effect will put an end to organic cropping on these farms.


Organic logos: Germany the frontrunner

Switzerland: record year for organics

In 2016 the 7.8 % growth of the Swiss organic market was three percentage points higher than growth in 2015. For 2017, a record number of conversions to organic are reported by the Swiss organic association Bio Suisse.

End of May the Organic Trade Association OTA published its 2017 Organic Industry Survey at the Annual Policy Conference in Washington D.C.. The survey shows that total sales in 2016 increased to $47 billion US-Dollar. The robust American organic sector stayed on its upward trajectory in 2016, gaining new market share and shattering records, as consumers across the United States ate and used more organic products than ever before, explains OTA.

Italy: rising turnover of organic fruit and vegetables

France: organic retail continues to expand

As last year, France is excelling with high growth rates in the organic sector. In terms of both land area and turnover, the increase is impressive. The expansion of the specialist wholefood trade in France continues unabated. In the first four months of 2017 (middle of December 2016 to middle of April 2017)  61 specialist organic stores and organic supermarkets were opened. The average retail area measured 335 m². Total turnover of the organic industry, including catering, is around 7 billion euros.


Germany: 4.4 billion euros turnover with "No Genetic Engineering" food

The Verband Lebensmittel ohne Gentechnik (VLOG) – Association of Food without Genetic Engineering – is continuing its upward trajectory. In the first quarter of 2017 turnover grew by 12.5 percent.


Fraud cases in the US: how conventional became organic

The Washington Post reports the case of three shipments of so-called organic corn and soy to the USA. After thorough research, it established the origin of the shipments and revealed organic fraud on a massive scale. After the article was published the Organic Trade Association (OTA) calls on the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the National Organic Program to thoroughly and immediately complete investigations of any reports of fraudulent imported organic livestock feed either alleged in the story or otherwise reported by trade.

Sweden: New sales record for the organic market

Organic food sales increased by 3.9 billion Swedish Krona (SEK) (€390m) to 25.4 billion SEK (€2.54 billion) in 2016. Organic food sales rose from 7.7 percent to 8.7 percent of the total food market, and online sales stand out with organic food sales now 25 percent of the market. The organic market has been growing for 20 consecutive years and is expected to double within the next 10-year period.

More farmers cultivate organically, more land is certified organic, and 179 countries report organic farming activities, as shown in the 2017 edition of the study “The World of Organic Agriculture” (data per end of 2015).
