Germany: organic sales have grown in the first two quarters of 2017

During the first half of 2017, German households have bought more organic food items again. German customers have spent a total of 7.5 per cent more money on fresh organic groceries. Even the amount of sold products in general has grown by 6.1 per cent.

Germany: organic eggs also contaminated with insecticide

EU: risks involved in the authorisation of stevia

As the University of Hohenheim reports, the EU Commission has authorised new uses of the natural sweetener stevia. Hitherto only steviol glycoside, not the natural stevia leaves, was approved for use as a calorie-free sweetener in food and beverages.


BioFach India: Buyers´Delegation for sourcing

Italy: posts new record in organic sales

Nielsen data presented by the Italian Association for Organic Trade AssoBio show a very positive trend in the sale of organic food in Italian supermarkets. From January to April this year, total sales (food, drinks, pet food) increased by 3.7%, up from 0.5% in 2016. The share of organic food in the total food sales increased from 2% in 2013 to 3.4%. Italian consumer purchases in supermarkets have more than tripled since 2009. Also traditional specialized organic shops are growing. 83% of Italian households bought organic products in 2016.

 


USA: CRISPR-Cas technique without labelling

Ritter Sport: "sustainability " more important than organic

Ritter Sport likes to parade its green image. This German chocolate manufacturer does have an organic line in its product range, but it's not doing so well. Four years ago, Ritter wanted to withdraw from its organic business and convert to “sustainable raw materials”, although it didn't carry through its intention. Now, however, the decision has obviously been made. The company is demanding that 3,500 cocoa farmers in Nicaragua acquire UTZ or Fairtrade certification, which in effect will put an end to organic cropping on these farms.
