Albania: Exports of organic products grew by 25 %

In 2006, the Ministry of Agriculture and Consumer Protection in Albania launched a campaign to raise awareness for protecting and promoting organic agriculture. Over the past two years, according to experts of the Ministry of Agriculture in Albania, exports of organic products in Albania have increased by 25 %. Albania has a high production of olives, tomatoes, cucumbers, watermelons, potatoes and peppers and an annual profit of about 14 million dollars for its organic production.
Albania has been engaged in the agro-food sector in international projects financed by the World Bank, FAO, USAID and other international bodies. This year, the government grants 15 million US $ for the development of local agriculture, reports AIAB. The publication of the World Bank Doing Business 2009 reveals that Albania has gained 50 positions since last year and is listed on position 86 now.
