Romania: Call for subsidies

President Marian Cioceanu of the association Bio Romania, has called for support from the European Union for the sector at a workshop on marketing of organic products. Romania has a good potential for developing organic farming, AIAB reports. The cultivated area increased from 190,000 hectares in 2007 to 220,000 hectares in 2008, on which 129,000 tons of organics worth 100 million € were produced. About 80 % of those products were raw materials. (Picture: Cosul Verde in Romania)
The opportunities for growth are strong: many producers are interested in entering this market, but they lack information on the procedures which have to be followed, as well as on production methods. Cioceanu stated that Romania was the only European country not to have received financial aid from the EU. She calls for funding to inform producers, but also to inform consumers who are currently not familiar with the advantages of organic products.
