UK: Big brands back Organic September

The organic sector in the UK – from independent retailers to supermarket chains, farmers and growers to the biggest food brands, health and beauty companies to textile manufacturers – are all backing this year’s Organic September. Household brands confirmed include Sainsbury’s, Waitrose, Seeds of Change and Kallo, the Soil Association reports.

Organised by the Soil Association and supported by Good Energy, Organic September is a month long celebration of all things organic. The campaign theme Small Changes, Big Difference (see picture) is designed to encourage as many people as possible to make small changes, which will collectively create one big difference.
 
Last year sales of organic food, drink, health & beauty and textiles products during Organic September grew by 7.7%. The Soil Association is confident that this year's campaign will lead to at least a 10% uplift in sales. Rob Sexton, Chief Executive, Soil Association Certification, said: “Kantar Worldpanel data to 9 June 2013 shows organic food sales have increased by 3.6% versus the same 12 week period in 2012. Organic September is a key tool in helping to maintain this growth through introducing new shoppers to organic food as well as encourage people to try health, beauty and textiles products too.” 

Price reductions, sampling opportunities and other promotional activity both online and in-store across the month will encourage consumers to try organic. The Soil Association has created a range of toolkits for brands, independent retailers and other organisations backing the month.

Key events taking part during Organic September include:
 

  • A weekend of organic health and beauty product promotions during Organic Health & Beauty Weekend on 7-8 September
  • The announcement of the Soil Association’s annual Organic Food Awards, supported by Seeds of Change, on 19 September. Now in their 27th year and with over 500 entries, the awards celebrate some of the tastiest, most sustainable food and drink the UK has to offer
  • A briefing for trade on latest market data and trends in London on the morning of 19 September
  • Organic Fashion & Textiles Weekend, a focal point for organic textiles and fashion brands and retailers on the weekend of 21-22 September.
