The International Symposium on Organic Agriculture and the Mediterranean - distinguishing the quality related to the origin will take place in Agadir, Morocco, from 2 to 4 December 2013. It is held by the Agricultural and Veterinary Institute Hassan II (Morocco), FiBL (Switzerland), the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Bari (Italy), the Moroccan Association of Organic Agriculture (Morocco), the association Agrotechnology Souss Massa Draa (Morocco) and the Exchange Network – Sustainable Development (Switzerland) in collaboration with others.
The symposium will take stock of the current status on research and development, and re-launch the debate on the achievements, constraints and future challenges for the organic sector in the Mediterranean. The progress in certifying typical products through labels and trademarks will be reviewed and future challenges will be identified. Multiple labelling will be discussed at the forum too. The symposium aims to develop a platform for dialogue and exchange between researchers, scientists and policy makers on organic products and other certificates in order to identify similarities and points of complementarity between the sectors. It is aimed at expanding exchange beyond the agronomic and economic aspects to include the relation of diets, organic farming, products of origin and the Mediterranean identity.
