Italy: Organic vegetable garden in Bari

by Redaktion (comments: 0)

Organic produce in a cooperative in Mola (Bari) is grown with the help of psychiatric patients and will be sold by the chain "Coop" in the province of Bari. This project aims at social re-integration of people with mental disorder and severe psycho-social distress. The cooperative „Nuovi Sentieri“ - "New Paths" employs ten patients, Greenplanet reports.

Coop supermarkets and hypermarkets in the Province of Bari will market these products. "The action by Coop and by large retailers in experiments like these,“ according to Patrizia Lusi, vice responsible for Puglia of the movement  "Italia dei Diritti", "helps to eliminate the idea that large retailers damage small businesses of territorial communities.“ With this initiative, various goals are achieved – it helps to integrate disadvantaged people, it promotes local, organic produce and shows the positive involvement of stores and institutions. The cooperative uses a greenhouse owned by the town and is certified by ICEA.
