Austria: Organic share of food at almost nine percent

The Austrians buy almost nine percent of fresh products in the conventional food retail in organic quality. This was announced by Agrarmarkt Austria (AMA) - which provided further organic figures.

According to AMA, an Austrian household has spent an average of 148 euros per year on organic fresh products in 2018. Compared to the previous year, the quantity purchased increased by 7.4% and the value of organic purchases by 6.7%. Nearly every Austrian bought organic food at least once in 2018, and the range of buyers was 96.5%.

As the AMA reports, eggs and milk account for the highest proportion of organic products. Potatoes, fresh vegetables and yoghurt are also well above average, while the organic share of meat and sausages is below average.

Conventional retail as main source of shopping

The most important source of supply are conventional food retailers. According to AMA, more than every second organic product is bought in the supermarket. 23% of purchases are made by discounters and 12% by direct marketers. The AA states the share of organic retailers at 2.2%, plus 7% for other purchasing sources.

The data comes from the household panel of market researchers from GfK and KeyQuest, for which 2,800 Austrian households keep accounts. The product groups covered are meat and poultry, sausages, milk and dairy products, cheese, fruit, vegetables, potatoes, eggs, frozen products, ready meals, but not bread and pastries. The entire dry assortment is also missing.
