Center for Food Safety criticizes Inflation Reduction Act

The Center for Food Safety is criticizing the "Inflation Reduction Act" that was signed by President Biden last week. Their Executive Director, Andrew Kimbrell, says the bill would not only address the climate crisis inadequately, it would furthermore even be counter-productive and would subsidize GMO technology.

Scientists estimate that industrial agriculture is responsible for at least one-third of all greenhouse gas emissions and only less than ten per cent of the bill's total funding would be directed to "climate-smart" agriculture. Even worse would be that 500 billion dollars would be used to support biofuels which to 94 per cent are derived from genetically engineered (GE) corn, and some of the remaining percentage would be biodiesel which is made of genetically engineered (GE) soy. For growing those crops, large amounts of pesticides and fertilizers are used. Andrew Kimbrell adds that the Secretary of Agriculture, Tom Vilsack, would have been a supporter of genetical engineering for years and would have plans to promote it further.
