Germany: Microplastic in food worries consumers

83% of German consumers are familiar with the topic of microplastics in food and 56% of them are therefore worried. The German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) determined this in its current consumer monitor. With this questioning, the BfR raises each February and August, what humans think about health and consumer topics.

The August survey now published shows that people's concern about microplastic in food has increased significantly by 11 percentage points within six months. Concerns about aluminium and salmonella in food and antibiotic resistance have also increased. The growing concern led to significantly more people in Germany classifying food as “not very safe” (18%) or “not safe” (5%).

The BfR still knows very little about microplastic in food. “In order to assess the actual risk of microplastic in the food chain, we need more reliable data,” says BfR President Andreas Hensel. He points out that microplastic has so far been mainly detected in the gastrointestinal tract of fish, which is usually not consumed.
